There are many other options for fossil prep, that (I believe) are better suited in many circumstances. I have used a Dremel with polishing compound and a cloth wheel to polish amber. It works great.

WEBOct 29, 2016 · I think the Dremel engraver does 7200 BpM. Then, most people use an air eraser or air abrasion tool to remove the left over matrix from the fossil itself. Think mini sand blaster - the compressed air pushes a gritty medium through the pen and abrades the softer matrix from the fossil. But again, a compressor is needed.

WEBMay 8, 2010 · Depends on the preservation. Most fossils are calcite or silica and should withstand the cleaning as long as you dont keep the tool on one spot too long. Just use your judgment, if the fossil looks fragile then you may want to use a gentler method (like a dentist pick - available at most flea markets for $1.)

Welp, if you're going to use a dremel for prep work then I suggest a flex shaft as holding the bulky tool gets annoying and over tine will cause your hand to cramp. Below is an image of the flex shaft. Its about $34 USD, so id say no more than 27-29 quid for you.

WEBOct 28, 2023 · Harvey Winkler scribes are coveted by preparators (there's usually a year + waitlist to get one and they come with the highest price tag). Zoic makes some really good tools as well as Paleo Tools. I use scribes from all 3. Zoic is newer to the market but have a large selection of tools that are well made with fun fossil themed names.
