We had tickets in the Back row of the Balcony for Chess ( K48 & K49). Had a reasonsable view of stage. However, did loose front of stage where it had been extended out over orchestra pit. However. A lady kindly gave us seats in Upper Circle Centre. So cant say exact view from balcony for performance as moved. But screens on stage and the fact that front of stage rises at times helps. View from Row H Centre Upper Circle. Was good. Did loose a little view right at front of stage but was either covered by screens or was area that raised so could see. Either way it didnot effect our enjoyment of the show.

20 members of a community choir went to see Chess last night, the show was excellent. BEWARE though = my friend bought a small g& t and a small wine and was charged £17.50, upstairs I bought the same drinks for the interval and was charged £11.50. 5 other members of our group had 5 small glasses of wine and was charged £40. What is going on here? Is it a scam to con the tourists? Where is this extra money going?
A:

These prices are excessive. I'm not sure it is a con unless the price lists show the published price to be different or the staff lied to you, but it does demonstrate the excessive costs of drinks in theatres and it is unfair. Had you bought both of your drink orders downstairs, you would have paid significantly more for your drinks than we paid for the two tickets for both my wife and I to see the performance. As with Enfield Peter, we tend to have a drink before we go. The timings of evening West End shows tend to be such that a nice meal with a bottle of wine can often be fitted in and costs about the same for a couple as two pairs of drinks at the theatre. The total cost for both of us to see Chess, have a pasta meal, bottle of wine and dessert at Bella Italia came in at just under £100, which is as it should be for a night out.
Q:
Can you advise which area would be best to sit in? I was looking at row B Dress circle as they are in our price range? thanks
A:
That’s where we sat - great view and close enough. Try for centrally located seats.
