When I was touring, the elevator had just stopped working. I would definitely call ahead to ensure the elevator is functioning properly before making the trip. There are benches near the bottom of the site (below the lifted platform where the tour takes place), however there are no benches on the guided tour. The tour doesn't take too long it's typically 45 minutes to an hour, it's not more than a few yards long. There is only one elevator on one side so you would have to walk all the way back just to take the elevator down. It's something to keep in mind if you're going with someone who needs more assistance.

There is a free, by-yourself tour along the old blast furnances that have signs to indicate the areas of interest and conditions the workers faced. But best to gain insights and answers to your questions from a specific tour guided walk along. Either of the tours are fine, check out Groupon in case there are any discounts.
