Q:
How safe is Union Square for a bus load of elderly people from out of town?
A:
I didn't have any problems when I was there. However, I would watch your purses/wallets and keep them in a safe place. If you are with a tour, it shouldn't be a problem.

I would stay near Fisherman's Wharf as it the most happening and interesting place in SF. Lot of eateries and nightlife around and closeby to main SF attractions. That said, Union square is not a bad place to be, but it's not Fisherman's Wharf if you understand what I am saying. We stayed at San Remo hotel - it is a 8 minute walk (0.5 mile) to the Fisherman's Wharf. The place is very nice and affordable, though given it is around 80 years old and one of the legacy hotels from SF doesn't have big rooms or Air conditioning but we did not need it since we visited in March. It cost us around 100$ per night for a couple.
