Hi not sure which u boat pens u are thinking of, but it was February when we were in St Nazaire, more organised than La Rochelle you can walk freely round here. If you speak good French, it's worth taking the tour in St Nazaire, they take you in some locked areas. We speak very little French, so it was a bit of a waste for us. The submarine is well worth seeing, that's in English, how they worked, slept, ate, and washed is beyond me, bit claustrophobic for me.
