Gerrit Cole tuned up for the postseason by holding the Athletics to one run in nine innings and Juan Soto came off the bench to hit an RBI double in the 10th, giving the New York Yankees a 4-2 win on Friday night in the opener of the final scheduled homestand ever in Oakland.

Juan Soto was originally in the lineup for Friday night's game against the Athletics but was pulled out after reporting soreness and swelling in his left leg. Manager Aaron Boone said X-rays were negative.

With Soto undergoing treatment after colliding with a wall on Thursday in Seattle, the Yankees decided to exercise caution.
