A volcanic eruption destroyed the Roman city of Pompeii in 79 AD, but an avalanche of tourists has caused officials to restrict daily visits to no more than 20,000.

The move follows other European tourist hotspots, including cities like Barcelona and Venice, which have taken steps to tackle overtourism.
