Helene continues to unleash its fury across the Southeast after leaving at least 55 people dead in five states, leveling communities, knocking out power and stranding many in floodwaters following the historic storm’s landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region Thursday night as a monstrous Category 4 hurricane.

In Western North Carolina, heavy rains are causing rivers and lakes to overflow, and landslides have blocked major roads. Across the state, two deaths have been linked to the storm.

Panicked local officials initially said the Waterville Dam and the Lake Lure Dam had burst, but both were reportedly still holding as of Friday afternoon
