The pictures in the link make clear how the short range ordering in the fibers results in a highly folded and interlocked structure. Further heating of the fiber will convert it to graphite.

I know that aluminum has a tendency to be oxidized; aluminum oxidizes readily by itself in air. I also know that carbon fiber itself is a conductor due to delocalized electrons.

Dec 30, 2014 · If you had a layered carbon/polymer composite, the chemical reaction with the oxygen wouldn't start at the polymer-carbon interface, it would start at the surface exposed to oxygen. However, since the reaction is exothermic, once it starts burning, it would go quickly. The carbon would burn too at these temperatures.
