Pretty mandatory for any non-artificer; otherwise you're not adding proficiency to hit, and can only make 1 attack per action because of loading.

May 14, 2021 · I have made a ranged battle smith, and it's awesome. If you want more damage, use a heavy crossbow. If you want higher defense, use a hand crossbow and a shield. Your average damage will go down by 2, but your AC will go up by 2 with the hand crossbow. You're definitely going to want the sharpshooter feat and the repeating shot infusion.

Apr 14, 2021 · 5e has this balancing view for ranged weapons that a "class" of higher damage ranged weapons has less range to compensate. Bows have the lowest damage of d6-d8, but insanely high range and no loading. Crossbows have the middle damage of d8-d10, but have much less range and loading.

Feb 3, 2022 · RAW any attack breaks stealth. Doesn’t matter from a longbow or a musket. That’s why Skulker is a thing. Not everyone uses Matt’s homebrew. Unless otherwise stated, they are referring to DMG firearms. Depends entirely on the setting. Any reasonable DM would let you eventually get a magic musket. Plus Fizbans added the Topaz Annihilator.

Kensei's Shot keeps you semi-relevant when you're out. Super reliant on a very limited resource and short rests so keep that in mind, however you will be incredibly mobile.
