The pre-'76 mercs had mild steel drive shafts that were prone to rust pitting around the seal area over time---regardless of care and maintenace.

Jul 23, 2010 · Force was made by mercury as an "entry level motor" to be cost efficient to boat manufactures and for the end user. They were a a "cheap design". Leaving generations of people to come with nothing but GIANT headaches. I was also told that my "125HP Force motor" is really only about 75HP. lol-TRUE story.

The 18hp was a flawless engine and I ran it hard for several years. It performed just fine when I sold it and I'll always remember that motor fondly.

Dec 26, 2010 · Force motors tend to measure horsepower at crank which gives about 15% higher than at prop. So a 90HP Force is like an 80HP Evinrude. But there is a somewhat larger issue. 90HP tends to be made by Mercury rather than Chrysler or USMarine. Force's reputation as an unreliable engine is due to the changes made by Mercury.

Brunswick (AMF) the maker of Bayliner and Trophy boats bought the line and started manufacturing the engines with no changes other than the decals. Two years later they changed the color and shape of the cowl.
