Perhaps it is a difference between cultures, but having not seen the American version, based on your analysis and my own personal experience with American films, I'd be more inclined to believe it's more "in your face" as opposed to the haunting nature of the Thai version.

But what pushed the movie from fun experiment to amazing for me is the characterization and exploration of the main character's self-denial.

But the director of wailing is producing this one, while the director of shutter is the director. Ofc its been so many years and id like to think he matured a lot as a director.
