Red oak on the other hand can be turned but it requires more time to smoothen it out and make it more pen looking. Jan 3, 2012 · I enjoy turning white oak. Avoid touching the wood. Metal from the turning tools don't leave any black but trace metal on your hand from grinding will. Lemon juice usually takes the black stains away if applied soon. We keep a bottle of real lemon in the shop. Cherry, maple, and several other foods will show black finger prints.

I do keep the piece wet while roughing, and use the plastic bag trick when necessary to take a break. John, From your response and MM's comment, sounds like I left the rough-outs too thick.

Approx. 10 month later the the funghi has done is work and can use the spalted wood for turning and carving. The wood is still wet and after turning/carving i dry the wood in the microwave.

For larger objects that take longer to turn, I will turn the outside, cover with sanding sealer, and then turn the inside. I have had Red Oak split while I was turning it because the endgrain when 1/16" thick will dry in minutes not hours.
