Apr 1, 2014 · Welding table top, material choice and thickness 04-01-2014, 06:26 PM I called a metal supplier near Pittsburgh earlier today about buying a 36" x 24" plate of steel to use as the top for a section of a work bench we are building into my son's new garage.

if all you're doing is small thin-wall or sheet work then yeah 3/16" is fine. but if you want to clamp a piece of 3/16" wall 3" square tube down so it stays square during welding, then a sheet-metal table top isn't going to cut it. personally i wouldn't use anything less than 1/4" plate for a table. my table is 3' x 6' x 1/2" thick.

It is a welding table. I am wondering how to keep the table top from rusting? I know it shouldn’t be painted because it couldn’t create an electrical connection to the metal being welded. Also, paint probably would not handle the heat well. I’m using a ¼” thick piece of steel plate for the top.

Jan 5, 2011 · I just received a bunch of mild steel angle iron and plan to build my first project, a welding table. I have 2" for the legs and 1 or 1.5 for bracing and cross members. What I really could use is some recommendations on what slap on the top. I plan to go 30"W * 60"L * 35"H. May use two 30*30 pieces for the top or just one piece haven't decided yet.

All the scare stories you've heard, about instant death, from welding galvanized, are just that. Urban legends. If you are not prepared, you would probably WISH you were dead, but that's normal. That all being said, I would probably not set up a welding table with a galvanized top. Remember, a welding table is supposed to make life easier for you.
Why isnt Aluminum Used for welding tables?
Feb 1, 2010 · My welding table is made of 1" Kaiser Precision 6061 T651. Its 48" x 48" with a large cut out on one side for me to work from. The precision aluminum was a good solution as compaired to buying steel plate, then having it blanchard gound to a similar tolerance. The table top is drilled and tapped every 4".

A 1/4" plate top will work as long as you don't plan on beating the he!! out of stuff on the table top. I use a 1" plate top, but it is definitely not portable. Jan 24, 2023 · Once the top shelf and legs are created, build the bottom frame/shelf of the table using the rest of the square tubing. I created a geometric pattern and measured the distance between each tube to keep the distance between them the same. Tack weld into place.

Sep 1, 2012 · My welding table is made completely out of steel "C" channel that used to be a steel wood rack for a fireplace. It's never had rust problems yet. Anyways, regardless you can use all the Aluminum you want but I might still suggest you consider a sheet of 12ga steel over the top and if you want you can even leave the mill scale on it.
