Since 1983, federal fire agencies have tracked 2.9 million wildfires across 216 million combined acres. That’s more than twice the area of California. From 2014 to 2023, an annual average of 62,277 wildfires have burned an average of 7.02 million acres.

The acreage figure is more than double the average annual acreage burned in the 1990s (3.3 million acres), although a greater number of fires occurred annually in the 1990s (78,600 average). Table 1. The Annual 2022 Wildfires Report from the National Centers for Environmental Information indicates that over 7.5 million acres of wildland were consumed by fire that year. According to the National Interagency Fire Center , Texas leads the country with the most wildfires and Alaska leads the county with the most acres burned.
Jun 1, 2023 · In 2022, 68,988 wildfires burned 7.6 million acres. Over 40% of those acres were in Alaska (3.1 million acres). About 8 million acres, on average, burned each year in wildfires between 2017 and 2021, more than double the average amount from 1987 to 1991. On average, a fire on federal lands is five times the size of one on nonfederal lands.
Sep 8, 2021 · From 2011 to 2020, there were an average of 62,805 wildfires annually and an average of 7.5 million acres impacted annually. In 2020, 58,950 wildfires burned 10.1 million acres, the second-most acreage impacted in a year (see Figure 2) since 1960; nearly 40% of these acres were in California. Nearly half of the acres impacted were on NFS lands.
